How to export your chats from Character.AI
- All chats (mobile app): Profile → Settings icon → Legal & Privacy → "Export Data". The official export can take 3 to 4 weeks to arrive, and the emailed download link expires 7 days after it's sent.
- All chats (web): Profile → Profile Settings → Account → Manage Account & Data → "Export Data". Same export, same 3 to 4 week wait and 7-day link.
- One chat (desktop): install the CAI Tools browser extension, open the chat on character.ai and download it as Offline .html, Tavern .jsonl or Oobabooga .json.
- Anywhere: open the chat, scroll to the top so older messages load, select all and copy.

How to export your characters from Character.AI
- The official export ZIP above includes the characters you made (
character.json). - With CAI Tools, you can download a character as a PNG or JSON character card.
- Pinned memories aren't included in either, so copy those by hand.
How to import them into Rift Universe
- Upload the ZIP or files below as they are, or paste the copied chat into the box.
- If asked, choose which name is you and check the speakers.
- Pick a new private character or one of yours, then tap Import. Up to 2,000 messages (newest kept), 20 imports a day.
Imported characters and chats stay private to you.

- Chai, PolyBuzz, Talkie, SpicyChat: copy the chat and paste it into the box.
- SillyTavern, TavernAI, Janitor AI, RisuAI, Agnaistic: upload the chat file (.jsonl or .json).
- Chub, TavernAI, SillyTavern character cards: upload the PNG or JSON card to start a fresh story with that character.
- Lorebooks: add the lorebook JSON from a character's Lorebooks section.
Questions
Can I import my Character.AI chats into another app?
Yes. Rift Universe reads the official Character.AI export ZIP, CAI Tools downloads and pasted chat text, and turns each one into a chat you can continue.
Will my characters remember my story after importing?
Rift writes story notes from the whole imported history and sends the recent messages with every reply, so the character picks up where you left off.
What happens to my Character.AI characters if the company is sold?
A buyer is expected around late November or early December, and nobody outside the sale knows yet what a new owner will change. Exporting now gives you a copy of your chats and characters whatever happens.
Does Rift Universe cost anything?
No. Importing and chatting are free, and story memory isn't behind a paywall. RiftPass is an optional upgrade.
Is Rift Universe 18+?
Yes. Rift Universe is for adults: mature themes and romance, but not explicit.
