How to export your Character.AI chats (and keep them)

Your chats are yours. Here's how to get them out before a filter change, an outage, or a deleted character takes them.

Method 1: the official export (mobile app or web)

  1. In the mobile app: Profile → Settings icon → Legal & Privacy → Export Data.
  2. On the web: Profile → Profile Settings → Account → Manage Account & Data → Export Data.
  3. Character.AI's help center says the export can take 3 to 4 weeks to arrive, and the emailed download link expires 7 days after it's sent. You can only have one request at a time.
  4. You get a ZIP named after your username containing user.json, character.json and message.json.

Caveats: very long chats can be truncated, and pinned memories aren't included — copy those by hand. Request it today, and while you wait, use CAI Tools or copy-and-paste to save the chats that matter most.

Method 2: CAI Tools (desktop browser extension)

CAI Tools is an extension for Chrome and Firefox that adds a download button to each chat on character.ai. It exports a single chat as JSONL, JSON or HTML. It's the fastest way to save one chat, and it keeps the exact message order.

Method 3: copy-paste (works anywhere)

  1. Open the chat on desktop (or in a mobile browser in desktop mode).
  2. Scroll to the top so the older messages load.
  3. Select all, copy, and paste into a document.

The name lines and the "c.ai" badges are fine to leave in.

What to do with it

Does the export include every chat?
