While gamers and streamers alike have been expecting to hear the news that Twitch had been purchased, it came as a surprise that the purchaser was Amazon. Twitch had been in talks with Google until recently, when it’s presumed that Google backed out due to the competition between Twitch and YouTube. Once Google had stepped back, Amazon stepped in. Amazon has been trying to get a hold of the gamer market for a while (see the gaming features of the new Fire TV), so they made the strategic decision to purchase Twitch for $ 970 million.
